As an alternative to flowers, more people are now electing to have money given to a specific charity in memory of the deceased. In this way a charity that has meant something to the deceased or their family can receive donations that they would otherwise not have.
Visit our donation page by clicking the button.
We offer a service to all our clients whereby we will collect donations for any registered charity on their behalf. We do this both prior to, and for five weeks following the funeral.
If you elect to have donations given, please be aware that we can only accept them for registered charities. Our preferred method for donations is via our online funds, as these are processed weekly and Gift Aid is automatically collected on all eligible donations. The next-of-kin, or other nominated contact will receive a notification via email of all donations made online, and how much has been raised.
When instructed we will include details for charitable donations in any death notice placed in the local papers.
Below is a small selection of charities we have recently forwarded donations to:
- Cancer Research UK
- The Hospice of St Francis
- Rennie Grove Hospice Care
- National Asthma Campaign
In the past 15 years (the time we have been recording donations) we have passed over £1,000,000 to the charities we deal with - with over £200,000 of that amount going to The Hospice of St Francis. So as you can see, this can be a great way of raising a lot of money for good causes and leaving a lasting legacy in memory of your loved one.
Ways to donate
Donations may be made online via our partner, Memory Giving, or by sending a cheque via our offices. We regret that we are unable to accept cash donations.
We strongly recommend that you donate online, but if you would like to donate by cheque, please make a cheque payable to the charity nominated by the family. Where there is more than one charity nominated, you can make a cheque payable to either of them, or multiple cheques, each payable to one charity. Please DO NOT make a single cheque payable to multiple charities, as it cannot be split. Please also do not make cheques payable to J. Worley Funeral Directors, as we are unable to cash these and they will be returned to your bank.
Please ensure that you include details of who the cheque is memory of (written on the reverse of the cheque if possible. We regret that due to the GDPR legislation that came into force on 28th May 2018, we cannot pass your details on to the family of the deceased or the charity concerned if you donate by cheque. Your donation will be listed with others received, but will be anonymised. If you wish your donation to be recognised, you will need to make it online.
Cheques should be sent to our office at 48 Lawn Lane, Hemel Hempstead, Herts. HP3 9HL, or handed to our staff at the funeral. Cheques will be held for approximately five weeks following the funeral and then sent to the charity when the fund closes.
Follow the link below to be taken to our partners at Memory Giving. There, you will find a list of open donation funds.
Gift Aid (add to your donation for nothing!)
When you donate online you will be given the option to add Gift Aid. If you are a UK tax payer, this will enable the charity to claim 25% of your donation back from the government, making every pound you donate worth £1.25. Gift Aid will not be applied to donations made by cheque.
We do not charge an administration fee for this service, it is included in our professional fee. Memory Giving charge a percentage fee from each donation, however this is usually offset by the reclaimed Gift Aid. We do not hold any charitable donations in our own accounts and it is for this reason that we regret that we cannot accept cash donations or cheques payable to J. Worley. All donations are recorded by us when received at our offices, Memory Giving maintain a list of all online donations. Names and other details supplied with online donations may be passed to the beneficiary charity and the funeral instructor for acknowledgement purposes.
