Flowers or Donations

When somebody passes away, many people look for a way to express their love for that person and the grief that they feel at their passing.

It has long been the tradition for people to send floral tributes in memory of the deceased. That practice continues today and we are happy to receive tributes at our offices on the day of the funeral so that they can accompany the deceased to the service and place of committal. Please instruct your chosen florist to contact us for the correct day and time to deliver.

We are able to advise on local florists who can provide tributes. You can also order flowers via Interflora if you do not live locally and they will instruct a local florist on your behalf. There is more information specifically about floral tributes on our information pages. Read more about floral tributes here...

Donations

As an alternative to flowers, or even in addition to them, more and more people are now electing to have money given to a specific charity in memory of the deceased. In this way a charity that has meant something to the deceased or their family may receive donations that they would otherwise not.

We offer a service to all our clients whereby we will collect donations on their behalf following the funeral. Read more about our In Memoriam donations service here...

Visiting your loved one

At our premises in Hemel Hempstead and Berkhamsted we have chapels of rest or viewing rooms where you can come and spend time with your loved one. These are quiet rooms where you, your family and your friends can pay last respects to the deceased.

We always endeavour to present your loved one in the most dignified and sensitive way possible. They will normally be in a restful pose in their coffin, but you can also ask for the coffin to be closed if you would prefer.

Our chapels are suitable for people of all faiths, or no faith at all to come and see the deceased. Where religious symbols are present, we will endeavour to ensure that they will be suited to the deceased's own beliefs. Where the deceased is non-religious, where possible we will, if requested, remove or cover any religious symbols prior to the viewing appointment.

Sometimes we may judge that it is unadvisable to visit the deceased. This may be due to their mode of passing, or simply down to the amount of time passed since they died. Where we feel that it is not advisable for your loved one to be seen in our chapel, we will inform you of this as soon as possible and try to offer you alternatives.

Current Restrictions on Funerals

Restrictions are in place for funerals nationally and locally at churches, cemeteries and crematoria and on the the services we can offer. These restrictions are in place to keep the public and funeral staff safe and we ask that you co-operate with us in ensuring they are adhered to.

West Herts Crematorium

  • 20 mourners are permitted in the North Chapel, 15 mourners are permitted in the South Chapel
  • Face coverings must be worn by everyone who enters the chapel unless you are exempt from doing so.
  • Curtains must close at the end of the service. The voile curtains can be used for this purpose.
  • No singing is permitted during a funeral service.
  • Flowers must not be placed on the coffin by mourners during the service and mourners must not approach the coffin during the service. A small table can be placed in front of the chapel for this purpose.
  • Mourners are not permitted into the Chapel until they are invited to do so.

Services must take no more than 25 minutes unless an additional time has been booked. This is to allow enough time to sanitise the chapels before the next service can start.

The crematorium would also encourage any additional people outside the permitted number of mourners to stay at home and take advantage of our free webcasting service. it is not appropriate for large groups to people to gather outside the chapels, before, during or after the service, as this can interfere with other families using the crematorium.

Chilterns Crematorium

Similar restrictions are in place at the Chilterns Crematorium, although chapels there can accommodate 30 mourners each.

Churches

Each church will have their own restrictions and procedures in place. The minister who will be taking the funeral will advise you of these when talking to you about the funeral content.

Cemeteries

Being outdoor venues means that there are less restrictions, but a maximum of 30 mourners is still in place, there should still be no singing and normal social distancing rules must be observed.

Our Services

We are currently limiting the availability of certain services to keep our clients, staff and families safe.

Currently all funeral arrangements are being done over the phone. We'll contact you at an agreed time to take all of the details from you. This will allow us to complete all of the necessary documentation for the funeral to take place. We will then either offer you an appointment for 1 or 2 people to come to our office to sign the paperwork.

We will be able to provide one limousine for the funeral, carrying up to 5 people from the same family/household/support bubble. This will be able to pick up from one address only, and will return to that address.

Viewing and dressing of the deceased will only be available where we can verify that a COVID test has been carried out and proved negative no more than 4 days before death. This is to avoid unnecessary risk to our staff when preparing the deceased. Visits with closed coffins may be available where a negative test cannot be verified. Time in our chapel will be allocated to avoid outgoing funerals and other appointments. Other restrictions will be explained to you when booking your appointment.

Our staff will explain any changes to these restrictions or any additional ones when making the funeral arrangements. If you have any specific requests, please ask and we will do our best to accommodate them.

How long from making the arrangements will be be for the funeral to take place?

This will depend on the funeral arrangements. A simple burial may only take a few days to arrange, a service in church followed by a cremation may take longer. Cremations generally take longer to happen due to the complexity of the paperwork involved. If the Coroner is involved, this can also add time. We will advise you approximately how long you can expect to wait for the service when you contact us.

If you have any important dates, such as travel plans, birthdays, etc. please let us know as soon as you can so that we can accommodate your requirements.

Does the funeral have to be taken by a priest/vicar?

No, it doesn’t. You can choose whether to have a religious or non-religious funeral. Either way, you do not actually need to have an celebrant involved in the funeral, although it is strongly advised. A family member or friend may wish to lead the service, and while this can be very successful, they will need to be aware of local rules and timings, etc, at whatever venue the funeral is taking place at.

Can the funeral be webcast or recorded?

Yes. At our local crematoria, webcasting facilities are installed in each chapel. This allows for people who cannot attend the funeral to watch online. Recordings of the service can also be made for people to watch later. Please ensure that you let your funeral arranger & minister/celebrant know if you would like this so that it can be booked and the details provided to you in plenty of time.
